Boardgames are something the whole family can enjoy, and they get you spending time together and away from the TV screen, iPads and phones. I haven’t purchased a new game in a long time so when we were offered to try out the 5 Second Rule I was all for it – I had seen it on the Ellen Degeneres Show and it was hilarious.
The 5 Second Rule is for 3-6 players – we had two adults plus our 7 and 9 year old daughters which worked well. To move around the board you have to answer questions, each one requires three answers and you have to answer it in the 5 second time frame. It should be easy to name 3 breeds of dog – but can you do it under the pressure of 5 seconds twisting down and with the other players staring, waiting for you to get flustered? Time is not on your side, so just say what comes to mind and risk ridiculous answers slipping out as time twirls down on the spiral timer.
There is a series of twists in the game to make it interesting – if the first player can’t answer their question correctly play moves on, but you can’t use any answers previously given. Players are given switch cards to change to a new question if they are asked one they don’t like, pass on cards to pass questions on to one of their opponents, and a danger zone on the board game means you need to answer your question correctly in one go or you’ll be penalised. The player who answers the most questions the fastest and reaches the finish first is the winner.
This was a lot of fun to play. The questions vary from very basic to difficult. The game caused a lot of laughs and it is a lot harder than you think to come up with three answers in 5 seconds – no matter how quick you think you might be! Check it out on the Ellen Show below:
