The littlest member of the family has discovered her artistic side lately – unfortunately for me this involves finding anything she can grasp and run through the house drawing on walls, beds, desks, doors and just about any other surface that is within her reach. She thinks she is pretty clever – mum not so much. She didn’t have any of her own things to teach her how to sit and draw properly, so the delivery from Crayola recently could not have come at a better time.
My First Crayola art supplies and creative activities are designed specifically for little hands. At 20 months Miss Ella is hitting the exploration stage – she can grip crayons and markers and scribble on paper – her eye-hand co-ordination is quite developed which is new to me as some of my other children took a lot longer to master this.
The Crayola Products she tested out were from the My First Crayola Range and included:
My First Palm-Grip Crayons: RRP $9.49
These are recommended for ages 1+ and come in a 3 pack: red, blue and yellow. They are egg shaped and easy for little hands to hold onto – she has no trouble drawing with these, they fit comfortably in the palm of her hands. Each crayon is the equivalent of 8 triangular crayons, which means they are long lasting. Flat bottoms mean they won’t roll easily off a table top when drawing.
This 8 pack of crayons is recommended for ages 2+. Although she isn’t 2 year old yet she had no trouble gripping these – and I was surprised at how easily she picked them up and knew how to draw with them since prior to now she hadn’t used crayons. The triangular shape means mum or dad aren’t retrieving crayons off the floor constantly, and the bright fun colours were a hit.
Little Miss knew exactly what these were since markers were her choice for decorating the house with. Recommended for 2 years + they have a traditional round shape and come in a pack of 8. Secure tips can’t be crushed or removed by little ones, and they are washable. These caused great excitement for her – normally I am running after her grabbing them off her so she thought it was fantastic to be handed a packet of them – not only did she draw on the book she had, she decorated herself in the process. By bedtime after a swim in the pool the artwork on her legs was nowhere to be seen. Washable gets the thumbs up from me.
Stickers are a winner with every child I know, and toddlers are no exception. This was the favourite of the day – a 24 page colouring book that includes 40 re-positionable stickers. These come in three different themes – At the Farm, Under the Sea and Just Hatched. Ella got At the Farm and the different animals to decorate were a big hit. With a little help she had a great time sticking and resticking the different animals and items, then colouring in and redoing it all over again.
Also available in the range are the My First Easy-Grip Colored Pencils. RRP $4.99 these are an 8 pack that have characters printed on the barrels – bees, octopus, and zebras to name a few. Designed for ages 3+ the no-roll triangular shape promotes more purposeful and controlled drawing and colouring.
A big afternoon of fun and creating thanks to Crayola, and I am crossing my fingers now she has her own box of art supplies my walls might get a break.
