For 20 years I have been watching kids TV programs. Kids, especially the younger age group are very particular about what they like, and you will know whether something is a hit by how often they ask to watch it. They are creatures of habit children and think nothing of watching the same show over and over….and over again. I don’t limit screen time in our home, the kids get up and the TV is on. It runs most of the day and they come in and out and sit down when they want to. For mums watching the same episode time and time again can become monotonous, so when a new show is found it’s a winner for all concerned!
Australian children are being captivated by a brand-new TV series: Twirlywoos. It’s the latest preschool offering by renowned children’s TV specialist Anne Wood, creator of Teletubbies and In The Night Garden. In just three months from its Australian launch on ABC Kids, 2.6 million episodes of Twirlywoos were downloaded!
A funny flight of discovery, Twirlywoos, is a comedy series for 2-5 year olds featuring the adorable antics of four, fruit tea-loving birdlike characters: Great BigHoo, Toodloo, Chickedy and Chick. Combining stop frame animation and live action sequences set in the real world, the series follows the Twirlywoos as they seek out new adventures and discover new things… often causing comic mayhem in their wake!
But it’s not just a case of idle entertainment, the creators behind Twirlywoos have imbued it with learning and engagement. The series uses fun and laughter to encourage preschoolers to think for themselves and gain confidence in their perceptions of the world.
“We live in the same world as children but they see it differently from us,” Anne said. “Half the fun of making programs for them is to try and understand these differences.”
Created in close collaboration with early year’s specialist Professor Cathy Nutbrown, Twirlywoos explores a different age appropriate concept in each episode, such as ‘over’, ‘underneath’ and ‘through’.
“Professor Nutbrown explained that very early in their thinking, children recognise patterns of movement such as up, underneath, wrapping, and round and round. And such ideas are the starting point for all Twirlywoos stories,” Anne said.
The team worked hard to ensure each storyline provided a good ‘fit’ with how many 3-4 year olds see the world, what they find funny, silly and surprising.
In explaining the thinking behind Twirlywoos, Anne also reveals they always share work in progress with children before transmission.
“What we are looking for are those special moments of absorbed attention,” Anne said. “Watching children’s responses helps us get the right timing so we can leave space for the children to talk back to the screen before the story moves on.”
“One thing I’ve learned over 40 years of making children’s programs is respect for the opportunity that television gives us to share in a child’s world,” Anne said. “It never fails to surprise.”
Colourful, comical and curious, the Twirlywoos sail from far away to visit our world. Their natural curiosity means they learn something new in every episode. They hide, watching inquisitively what is going on around them, then when sure they are alone, they investigate what they have seen. The results are a laugh out loud treat! At the crucial moment, when the sound of the Hooter calls the Twirlywoos back to their boat, they often leave confusion behind in the real world!
